An ingrown hair forms when a hair grows back into the skin instead of out of it. They're itchy, red, often painful, and over time can cause permanent dark spots. Almost every case of ingrown hairs is preventable.
Why Men Get Them More Often
- Coarse, curly hair (especially on the neck and beard line) curls back into the follicle as it regrows.
- Shaving against the grain cuts the hair below skin level — when it regrows, it gets trapped.
- Tight collars, tight underwear, and friction trap moisture against the skin and inflame follicles.
The Prevention Routine
Before You Shave
- Take a hot shower first — soft hair cuts cleaner and lifts above the follicle.
- Use a glycolic-acid or salicylic-acid cleanser 2–3 times a week. These chemical exfoliants dissolve the dead skin that traps hairs.
- Apply a thin shaving oil or cream — never dry-shave.
The Shave Itself
- Always shave with the grain on the first pass.
- Rinse the blade after every stroke.
- Replace your blade every 5–7 shaves. Dull blades tear hair instead of cutting it.
After You Shave
- Cool rinse, then a fragrance-free moisturizer.
- Apply a 2% salicylic-acid serum to the shaved area twice a week.
Already Have Them — Now What?
Don't dig. You'll scar yourself. Instead:
- Apply a warm compress 2× a day for 10 minutes to loosen the trapped hair.
- Once the tip is visible at the surface, use sterilized fine-tip tweezers to lift it free without plucking the entire hair.
- Apply a 1% hydrocortisone cream to reduce inflammation, then 2% salicylic acid for the next several days.
- Skip shaving that area for 48 hours.
The Permanent Fix
If you get recurring ingrown hairs in the same spots — beard line, neck, bikini line — laser hair removal is the only true solution. Once the follicle is gone, ingrown hairs can't form there again.
